I had the good fortune to live in Japan for a year when I was young. I also had the good fortune to have a mother who was interested in a LOT of things, including the art of fish rubbing, or gyotaku. She made this fish rubbing 52 years ago and it's been framed and in various houses (military family, we moved a lot) and when I saw it last month, it had faded so much that the fish was almost invisible. The paper was dark on one side, stained, and splotchy. So I photographed Mom's print, brought out the details in the fish, then added my own touches, such as some photos of metal, a clamshell, a circular "moon" image, a bit of grunge, toned down the yellow colors, to come up with this. Mom died way too young, but a little bit of her lives on here.
I'm a photographer, writer, educator based on Whidbey Island in the Pacific Northwest, specializing in photomontage work, combining photos I've taken of rust, walls, peeling paint, birds, postage stamps, trees, etc. into images that are completely new, different, and often weird. I also create physical collages, then find myself photographing parts of them to include in my photomontages. It's crazy, but it's fun! My career has encompassed writing guidebooks (primarily about where to photograph in California), newsletters (guides for photographers about where to photograph in the United States), leading photo workshops, and conducting online classes. Great job. An artist friend of mine here in Florida has been experimenting with this technique and is entranced with it. The main problem he's run into is that he doesn't want to sell his work once he's completed it.
Carol Leigh replied:
I can see why he wouldn't want to sell it -- it's one-of-a-kind stuff. He just needs to make a whole lot more so that he doesn't regret parting with any! And heaven knows there must be **plenty** of fish there in Florida to work with!

Beautiful and delicate image, Carol!

Thank you, Sarah.
