as a mixed media artist myself, I totally understand and can see just how much work a mixed media piece of art is. Sadly it is not always appreciated, Carol. I love it, can see the layers and texture and know how much you put into it. I find it exciting and yet very soothing.

Artist's Description

So many things went into the making of this picture, including a 1906 “Chrysanthemum” postage stamp from my collection, an address on a vintage Japanese letter, calligraphy from a number of antique Japanese papers, a couple of hanko (Japanese signature stamps, often called “chops”), a watercolor circle I painted on mulberry paper, and a lot of my own scribbling. I like the overall warmth of this image, with touches of red here and there for interest.

About Carol Leigh

Carol Leigh

I'm a photographer, writer, educator based on Whidbey Island in the Pacific Northwest, specializing in photomontage work, combining photos I've taken of rust, walls, peeling paint, birds, postage stamps, trees, etc. into images that are completely new, different, and often weird. I also create physical collages, then find myself photographing parts of them to include in my photomontages. It's crazy, but it's fun! My career has encompassed writing guidebooks (primarily about where to photograph in California), newsletters (guides for photographers about where to photograph in the United States), leading photo workshops, and conducting online classes.
