Artist's Description

I used the three stamps as the main focal point in this piece, depicting (from top to bottom) the Buddha statue in Kamakura, Japan and a Douglas DC-4 (issued 1953), then Bodhisattva playing the flute (issued 1966-1969), and a 1942 stamp depicting Mt. Fuji. These stamps are all photographs. In fact, everything contained in this montage is a photo, including the ink stain, the horizontal lines, the pages from antique Japanese books, everything. There are even pictures of the textures and patterns formed as I clean my paintbrushes on brown kraft paper.

About Carol Leigh

Carol Leigh

I'm a photographer, writer, educator based on Whidbey Island in the Pacific Northwest, specializing in photomontage work, combining photos I've taken of rust, walls, peeling paint, birds, postage stamps, trees, etc. into images that are completely new, different, and often weird. I also create physical collages, then find myself photographing parts of them to include in my photomontages. It's crazy, but it's fun! My career has encompassed writing guidebooks (primarily about where to photograph in California), newsletters (guides for photographers about where to photograph in the United States), leading photo workshops, and conducting online classes.
