Lucky you to have the time (and freedom) to have this daily routine. (With congratulations, as well, for arranging your life this way.) The resulting of that quiet time are amazing!

Carol Leigh replied:

Claudia, what a very nice comment! Thank you. And yes, I realize -- and appreciate -- how lucky I am.

Thanks, Sarah. And now I must go see what you've been creating. You always do such fine work.

Artist's Description

My daily routine begins around 4:30 a.m., and I use the next few hours to just play around with my images. What if I combine this with that? What if I rotate it? What if I introduce this particular color? What happens then? No plans, no rules, just experimentation. The result is often a delightful surprise, and that’s what happened here.

I had been photographing military bunkers on the Washington coast, looking for interesting patterns on weathered walls. I combined a number of those photos together and then added photos of torn Japanese papers from an antique screen. The color palette is unusual, the design is simple, and I like the left-right feeling of movement that runs across the image. A good morning indeed!

About Carol Leigh

Carol Leigh

I'm a photographer, writer, educator based on Whidbey Island in the Pacific Northwest, specializing in photomontage work, combining photos I've taken of rust, walls, peeling paint, birds, postage stamps, trees, etc. into images that are completely new, different, and often weird. I also create physical collages, then find myself photographing parts of them to include in my photomontages. It's crazy, but it's fun! My career has encompassed writing guidebooks (primarily about where to photograph in California), newsletters (guides for photographers about where to photograph in the United States), leading photo workshops, and conducting online classes.
