Artist's Description
I was wandering around a boat yard and noticed patterns and scrapings on the side of one boat that intrigued me. I used it for the basis of this piece that calls to mind the earthquake and the resulting tsunami that Japan experienced March 11, 2011. Here on the Oregon coast, two years later, we're discovering boats and sections of docks that have floated across the Pacific to our shores. With these concepts in mind: big waves, floating debris, a vast ocean, two countries connected, I used my photos of boat textures, old Japanese currency, and more to create this picture.
About Carol Leigh
I'm a photographer, writer, educator based on Whidbey Island in the Pacific Northwest, specializing in photomontage work, combining photos I've taken of rust, walls, peeling paint, birds, postage stamps, trees, etc. into images that are completely new, different, and often weird. I also create physical collages, then find myself photographing parts of them to include in my photomontages. It's crazy, but it's fun! My career has encompassed writing guidebooks (primarily about where to photograph in California), newsletters (guides for photographers about where to photograph in the United States), leading photo workshops, and conducting online classes. Thank you, Mary. And yes, the explanation's a good one, isn't it?

This is awesome, Carol. And the explanation just adds nice layers to the image. Beautiful work.
