It rained heavily and steadily all night and when I awoke, I made this large series of “Winter Rains/Winter Nights” abstract images. I’m drawn to the dark, rich colors of warm browns and varying blues, as well as the strong linear and circular elements.

To make these, I combined a number of my hand-painted papers, vintage Japanese papers, and there’s even a piece of ledger paper in there somewhere.

One series is predominantly brown, the other series primarily blue. There are six in each series, and (to me) you could hang them either vertically or horizontally because they would work either way. I think they would look particularly good either as a canvas wrap or printed on metal.

I'm a photographer, writer, educator based on Whidbey Island in the Pacific Northwest, specializing in photomontage work, combining photos I've taken of rust, walls, peeling paint, birds, postage stamps, trees, etc. into images that are completely new, different, and often weird. I also create physical collages, then find myself photographing parts of them to include in my photomontages. It's crazy, but it's fun! My career has encompassed writing guidebooks (primarily about where to photograph in California), newsletters (guides for photographers about where to photograph in the United States), leading photo workshops, and conducting online classes.
